Guyana

76.7% —or about 15,104,000 hectares—of Guyana is forested. Of this, 61.7% —or roughly 9,314,000 hectares—is classified as primary forest, the most biodiverse form of forest. **Please note that these official Guyanese government are 15 years old and as such may no longer be accurate.

Change in Forest Cover: Between 1990 and 2000, Guyana had no significant change or no reported in forest cover, according to government figures. Scientists who are working in the country estimate that annual deforestation is around 15,000 ha per year.

Biodiversity and Protected Areas: Guyana has some 1263 known species of amphibians, birds, mammals and reptiles according to figures from the World Conservation Monitoring Centre. Of these, 2.1% are endemic, meaning they exist in no other country, and 2.2% are threatened. Guyana is home to at least 6409 species of vascular plants. 2.3% of Guyana is protected under IUCN categories I-V.
