TROPICAL RAINFORESTS: Deforestation rates tables and charts

French Polynesia Forest Information and Data

According to the U.N. FAO, 42.3% or about 155,000 ha of French Polynesia is forested, according to FAO. Of this 25.8% ( 40,000 ) is classified as primary forest, the most biodiverse and carbon-dense form of forest. French Polynesia had 10,000 ha of planted forest. French Polynesia's forests contain 21 million metric tons of carbon in living forest biomass. Biodiversity and Protected Areas: French Polynesia has some 116 known species of amphibians, birds, mammals and reptiles according to figures from the World Conservation Monitoring Centre. Of these, 36.2% are endemic, meaning they exist in no other country, and 31.9% are threatened. French Polynesia is home to at least 959 species of vascular plants, of which 58.4% are endemic. 1.3% of French Polynesia is protected under IUCN categories I-V.

    French Polynesia: Economy
Economy - overview:Since 1962, when France stationed military personnel in the region, French Polynesia has changed from a subsistence agricultural economy to one in which a high proportion of the work force is either employed by the military or supports the tourist industry. With the halt of French nuclear testing in 1996, the military contribution to the economy fell sharply. Tourism accounts for about one-fourth of GDP and is a primary source of hard currency earnings. Other sources of income are pearl farming and deep-sea commercial fishing. The small manufacturing sector primarily processes agricultural products. The territory benefits substantially from development agreements with France aimed principally at creating new businesses and strengthening social services.
