STATISTICS: Dominica

Dominica

61.3% —or about 46,000 hectares—of Dominica is forested. Of this, 58.7% —or roughly 27,000 hectares—is classified as primary forest, the most biodiverse form of forest.

Change in Forest Cover: Between 1990 and 2000, Dominica lost an average of 300 hectares of forest per year. The amounts to an average annual deforestation rate of 0.60%. Between 2000 and 2005, the rate of forest change decreased by 29.1% to 0.43% per annum. In total, between 1990 and 2005, Dominica lost 8.0% of its forest cover, or around 4,000 hectares. Dominica lost -1,000 hectares—0—of its primary forest cover during that time. Deforestation rates of primary cover have decreased 3.6% since the close of the 1990s. Measuring the total rate of habitat conversion (defined as change in forest area plus change in woodland area minus net plantation expansion) for the 1990-2005 interval, Dominica lost 8.0% of its forest and woodland habitat.

Biodiversity and Protected Areas: Dominica has some 202 known species of amphibians, birds, mammals and reptiles according to figures from the World Conservation Monitoring Centre. Of these, 3.5% are endemic, meaning they exist in no other country, and 5.4% are threatened. Dominica is home to at least 1228 species of vascular plants, of which 0.9% are endemic. 13.3% of Dominica is protected under IUCN categories I-V.

Dominica: Economy
Economy - overview:The Dominican economy depends on agriculture, primarily bananas, and remains highly vulnerable to climatic conditions and international economic developments. Production of bananas dropped precipitously in 2003, a major reason for the 1% decline in GDP. Tourism increased in 2003 as the government sought to promote Dominica as an "ecotourism" destination. Development of the tourism industry remains difficult, however, because of the rugged coastline, lack of beaches, and the absence of an international airport. The government began a comprehensive restructuring of the economy in 2003 - including elimination of price controls, privatization of the state banana company, and tax increases - to address Dominica's economic crisis and to meet IMF targets. In order to diversify the island's production base the government is attempting to develop an offshore financial sector and is planning to construct an oil refinery on the eastern part of the island.
